Midland Area Bike Camp 2010
The 2010 Midland Area Bike Camp was a huge success. Families drove from all over the region to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn to ride a bike. All of the campers worked hard all week, and so did the volunteers! Because of their efforts, 93% of the campers learned to ride a two wheel bike in 5 days! The Lose the Training Wheels bikes and methods really do work.
This year’s camp was extraordinary due to our sponsors. Tender Ridge Angus came through with a huge grant and a celebration dinner to boot! Thank you especially to Sarah & Matt who worked all day to provide steak wraps for over 100 people! In addition, the facilities at the Midland Evangelical Free Church were perfect for bike camp. We had over 17,000 square feet of air conditioned riding space, plus parking lots outside for our advanced campers. Everyone made it outside, and the church was gracious in every way. Thank you EV FREE!
The Midland community knows how to rally around a cause, and The Arc of Midland is proud to have so many partners in this project. Thank you to: The H, The Great Lakes Loons, Midland Rotary International, Tri-City Cyclists, McCreadie Sales, The Dyer Family, The Environmental Operations Team from Dow Chemical, Hamilton’s Bakery, Fazoli’s, Midland Fire Department, Kathy Romain and ALL of our amazing volunteers! You have all made a difference in the lives of these campers. Thank you for making the Midland Area Bike Camp so successful.

DJ Gaiter, 9, of Saginaw smiles as he practices riding his bike at the final day of the Midland Area Bike Camp. The Lose The Training Wheels program is focused on helping children with disabilities learn to ride two-wheeled bikes. Gaiter's mother, Tiffany Gaiter, 36, was told that DJ would never learn how to ride a bike. By the third day DJ was riding a two-wheeler. "It was life changing," Tiffany Gaiter said. "The sense of pride he now has because he can ride with the other neighborhood kids, its amazing." The difference with this program is the back wheel that is shaped like a rolling pin. As the children become more comfortable, gaining balance and self-confidence, the graduate to a smaller flat wheel that wobbles more. By the end of the program many kids are able to ride on the narrow two-wheeled bikes. Bikes are equipped with handles on the back so the children's personal spotters can guide them if they go too fast or lose control. "As a mother I can't say enough. It's a little victory, but its so much more. It's one more step for them to be independent," Gaiter said. "And five days is all it took."
