Arc Walk, Roll & Stroll

Saturday, August 12, 2006

What a fantastic day – beautiful weather and good friends all showed up for the first Arc Walk, Stroll and Roll on Saturday, August 12.  The day started at the Farmer’s Market with drumming by Chris Peeler, face painting, music courtesy of Steve Dolan, and warm-up exercises and stretches led by Jan Lampman.  Our president of the Arc board of directors Rick Bergstein welcomed all of our enthusiastic walker and rollers.  He surprised Kathy Dolan by leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday.

The walkers and rollers, all wearing bright white T-shirts with the Arc logo, started out after a ribbon cutting and headed down the Rail Trail.  One stroller was carrying Janet Michael’s very cutely dressed dog named Devo! And another stroller carried Rick Bergstein’s grandson, Ethan.

The walkers and rollers had a choice of walking one two or three miles, most made it the entire three miles, grabbing bottled water, fruit and snacks along the way. Once everyone returned to the Farmer’s Market there were free water bottles and lots of prizes. They also had the opportunity to peruse and buy some of the microenterprise products and GMS arts.

We would like to thank our Gold Sponsor Ashman Court Marriott Conference Hotel, and our Silver sponsors Dow Corning Corporation and MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. And a huge thank you to McCreadie Sales for our beautiful new banner and the nicely designed water bottles and t-shirts.  In addition, we could not have had such a wonderful event without the support of donations from Chemical Bank, Dow Chemical Company, Dow Chemical Employees Credit Union, Roth Cleaners; Cline, Close & Dyer, PLC; Handlon, Eastman, DeWitt & Beale; Bolger & Battle, Comerica Bank, A.S. Arbury & Sons, AAA Michigan, I’ve Been Framed, Prism Quality Services, Big Apple Bagel, Peel & Pare, Ace Hardware, Heather & Holly, Kroger, Bryan’s Bike Shop, Glen’s Market, School Days, The Yoga Place, Wolverine Bank, Elco Water and very generous individuals who pledged and donated money to help The Arc continue their work.  We are ever grateful to the Arc staff for their boundless energy and commitment; and to The Arc Board of Directors whose continued direction and support helps this organization to passionately continue the mission.

The Arc of Midland is a non-profit group whose mission is to advocate for people with developmental disabilities. To promote the general welfare and to foster their presence, participation and inclusion in the community.  The Walk, Stroll & Roll brought together many community members, including the Midland High School Football players, the Fun Time Crew, Northwood students and over 100 community members who were out for a great day, a good walk and tons of fun.

The 2007 Arc Walk, Stroll & Roll will take place on Sunday, June 10, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Farmer's Market in Downtown Midland.
